Critical Care Medicine
Overview
The Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) of Peking University People’s Hospital is the 1st integrated department of CCM in China.
The Dept. of CCM was integrated in 2009 and composed of 3 Units: Surgical, Medical and Cardiovascular, which also could be named sub-ICU, such as Emergency (EICU), Respiratory (RICU), Transplant (TICU) as well as Neurological ICU (NICU). The Dept. of CCM treats all of adult critically ill patients from intra and extra-hospital.
In 2010, we were certified to be one of the 1st batches of “The National Clinical Center for CCM (tentative)”. We are also the major Dept. of the Center of CCM of Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC), which constituted 22 affiliated and teaching hospitals in Beijing and other provinces.
As one of the national leading CCM departments, we received more than 2,600 patients nationwide and more than 100 fellows and visitors(both doctors and nurses) each year.
Director: Prof. An Youzhong
History
In the early 1980s, Prof. Huang Cuiting and Prof. Du Ruyu, both the former presidents of People’s Hospital determined to establish an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the hospital. The first intensive care unit of our hospital was the surgical ICU (SICU) established in 1989, then followed by Cardiac surgical ICU (CSICU), Respiratory ICU (RICU), Emergency ICU (EICU) as well as liver transplant ICU (TICU) etc. from 1994 to 2004.
In early 2009, the hospital decided to integrate all these units mentioned above to be the current Department of Critical Care Medicine. As a general department of CCM, we keep all of the sub-units but unify all of our staff as a specialty entity.
Prof. An Youzhong has been the first chairman of the Dept. of CCM since 2009. Prof. An is now the vice-president of the sub-society of CCM of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the standing member of the sub-society of CCM of the Chinese Medical Association(CMA), he is also the vice-president of sub societies of both the Enteral and Parenteral Nutritional Therapy and the CCM of Beijing Medical Association(BMA). As the founder, he is the Chairman of the CCM center of Peking University Health Science Center.
Faculty
Now we have 24 doctors, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors and 7 attending doctors. Under the leadership of Prof. An Youzhong, most of our doctors are professional experts and are recognized nationally for their reputations; most of them also have important positions in different societies.
We have 102 nurses, including 1 supervisor nurse practitioner and 7 nurse practitioners. Our nurses are under the leadership of the chief head nurse, Ms. Wu Xiaoying, who is a member of the Critical Care branch of the Beijing Nursing Association.
During the period of SARS in 2003, the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 and the Yushu Earthquake in 2010, all of our medical and nursing staff showed great courage and their professional dedication in caring the critically ill patients and saving a lot of patients' lives. Working as a critical care practitioner is full of challenges, but all of our doctors and nurses never regret and are always proud of being an intensivist critical care nurse.
Facilities
As an integrated CCM department, at present, we have 41 intensive care beds equipt with multi-parameter Monitor, sophisticated Ventilator, infusion-pumping system, bedside Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Fiberoptic Bronchoscope, Electrocardiogram, Hemodynamic monitoring tools (PA catheters, PiCCO system, Ultrasound, etc), defibrillator, Bispectral Index(BIS) and ECMO, etc.
More important is all the above equipment and techniques are skillfully used by our well-trained staff. With all this advanced equipment we can do better in making diagnoses and providing treatment for patients.
A nationally leading ICU Center
Each year more than 2600 critically ill patients are treated in our unit, the mortality rate is less than 5%, with an average APACHE II Score of 17. In the past 20 years, with endless hard work, we gained a great deal of experience in treating critically ill patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, especially for severe Sepsis, multiple trauma, severe malnutrition, organ transplantation, Severe Acute Pancreatitis(SAP), Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome(ARDS), COPD, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation(DIC), Acute Coronary Syndrome(ACS), and Acute Renal Failure(ARF), etc. We are skilled in performing gastrointestinal function monitoring, enteral and parenteral nutrition support, sedation and analgesia for critically ill patients.
Teaching and academic
Our department also takes the responsibility for teaching undergraduate/graduate medical students, rotating residents as well as a lot of visiting trainee doctors through various training forms including case analysis, clinical teaching rounds and special lectures, etc.
Our training aims to show our young colleagues how to treat critically ill patients as human beings with a disease, through our teaching, making the students familiar with the relevant protocols and common procedures. What`s more important, is to treat the patient with humanistic concern.
In addition, as the founder and chairman department of the Center of CCM of PUHSC, we have organized the Peking University Critical Care Medicine Forum(PUCCMF) for eight years. Now the PUCCMF has become one of the most important academic conferences in the CCM field and plays a role in the development of critical care medicine in China.
