The Department of Endocrinology
The Department of Endocrinology of Peking University People’s Hospital was established in 1986. Professor Linong Ji, a leading physician and scientist in the field of diabetes, endocrine and metabolism in China, currently chair the department. Professor Linong Ji is currently the Chair of IDF West-pacific Region and President of Chinese Geriatric Endocrine Society.
The department consists of the out-patient clinic, the in-patient ward and the laboratory equipped with modern equipments, and is committed to teaching and training medical professionals at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There are 12 professors and associate professors, 6 attending physicians, 6 clinical fellows,15 nurses and 4 laboratory technologists in the department.
The department is a leading institute in diabetes cares and research in China. The department is currently the National Key Specialized Center for Endocrinology and Beijing Clinical Medical Research Center of Diabetes accredited by National Health and Family Planning Commission and Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, respectively. It is also one of the “diabetes educator training centers” designated by the project HOPE, a worldwide diabetes education program.
In the past three decades, the department has been fully dedicated to provide the best clinical care on the diagnosis, management and treatment in diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic disorders.Currently, the daily number of patients visits at out-patient clinic is over 500, and the monthly number of discharged patients from the ward is around 110. The department’s research activities mainly focus on understanding the etiology of diseases, identifying the unmet medical needs in disease management, as well as finding new methods for disease treatment.The department is undertaking numerousresearch projects including but not limited to those supported by National Natural Science Foundation, the National Basic Research Program of China, the National High-tech Research and Development program of China, and Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. In addition, the department has led many clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of new anti-diabetes drugs, and ProfessorLinong Ji is the principal investigator of several international multi-center clinical studies. Up to now, in the past five years, over 200scientific papers were published in peer reviewed journal such as Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Diabetes Obesity & Metabolism, etc.
Besides regular endocrinology service, the department also provides more individualized clinical services, including special program on newly-diagnosed diabetes,adolescent diabetes,gestational diabetes, monogenic diabetes, insulin pump therapies, type 1 diabetes, continuous glucose monitoring, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, pituitary disease, adrenal gland disorder and medical nutrition.
