About Us

    The Department of Gastroenterology of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH)is a nation-wide renowned center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of digestive system diseases, as well as to advancing the vision of gastroenterology through participation in clinical research and training future physicians. Composed of inpatient unit, out patient clinic, endoscopy center, gastrointestinal motility unit, ultrasonography unit and laboratory of molecular biology, our department is comprehensively experienced in medical care, research and education. The success of the department is due, in large part, to our dedicated faculty team of 27 physicians, 25 nurses and 2 technicians. Now led by Professor Liu Yu-lan, our department has entered a historically unprecedented period of rapid growth.

Patient Care

    The department of Gastroenterology at PKUPH offers sophisticated compassionate care and the most innovative treatments for patients with any type of digestive diseases. We provide comprehensive and coordinated care for every patient, and in return received high remarks for our hospitable and considerate high-quality medical service from our patients. We have several medical teams especially focusing on chronic liver diseases(including Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Autoimmune Liver Disease, drug-induced liver in-jury, and Budd-Chiari syndrome), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) , the diagnosis and endoscopic therapy for early-stage gastrointestinal cancer. We keep on exploration and innovation,and now we are renowned for excellent experience throughout the nation on the diseases including:

Endoscopy Center

     Up to date, a dedicated endoscopy center with digital gastrointestinal X-ray system, double-balloon enteroscopy and endoscopic ultrasound has been established in our department. Our Endoscopy Center has a team of accredited consultants who work with a dedicated team of specialist nurses. We have several skillful endoscopists teams, especially on endoscopic therapy for early stage gastrointestinal cancer and cholangiopancreatic diseases. Endoscopic procedures include both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to:

  • Gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS)
  • EUS guided fine needle aspiration(EUS-FNA)
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic therapy for CBD stones
  • Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL)
  • Endoscopic variceal sclerotherapy (EVS)
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  • Endoscopic submucosal Dissection (ESD)
  • Endoscopic dilation and esophageal stent implantation of esophageal strictures

 

Research

    The Department of Gastroenterology is dedicated to basic science and clinical research, funded by National Science Foundation of China, Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education, Beijing Medical Research and Development Fund, etc. Annually, numerous young physicians are supported by a amount of research funds and encouraged to do research abroad in world-class laboratories. Long-term international collaboration has been established between our research team (IBD team, NAFLD team and GI early stage cancer team) and several universities from America, Germany, Australia and Japan. Such collaboration helps create an environment for cutting-edge research, which is widely recognized by peer physicians. Especially in the areas of IBD and gut barrier, our original achievements are amongst the best institutes domestically. Well-trained physicians and researchers are organizedseveral specialty interest teams, including:

  • Intestinal barrier and intestinal flora

Education

    Under the leadership of Prof. Yulan Liu, we made a comprehensive evaluation plan to train young physicians to accomplish the teaching work successfully. Young teachers are encouraged to participate in bilingual teaching competitionsstrengthen their teaching as well as improve their teaching skills. And so far, we have achieved very good results in these competitions of Beiing City, Health and Science Center and Peking University People's hospital. Moreover,improve teaching quality, we also actively involved in teaching reform and teaching material editing.  Every year, about 10 students are admitted to the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in our department. Apart from the full-time programs, more than 20 physicians from around the country are selected to our residency programscontinuing medical education programs to keep abreast with change and innovation in medical services.

 

Others

   keep abreast with change and innovation in GI medical services, many young physicians were sent abroad for further training every year. Additionally, world renowned experts were invited to give lectures and hands-on guidance. Every year our physicians present oral and poster presentations at international and domestic annual meetings, such as American Digestive Disease Week (DDW) and European annual digestive disease week (UEGW). We have held "Immune-Mediated Digestive Diseases Forum" and "Intestinal Mucosa Barrier and Related Diseases Forum" for eight years which highlight frontier subjects in the gastroenterology and hepatology field. These two forums have successfully attracted a lot of GI experts and have improved our academic status significantly.
