About Us

In 1918 Chinas famous plague expert Dr. Wu Lien-teh created the Central Hospital of Peking (now Peking University People's Hospital), and served as the first president. Dr. Wu Lien-teh was committed to the diagnosis and control of China’s common infectious diseases such as plague, malaria and the others, who was the founder of prevention and control of infectious diseases in China. Adhering to our ancestors’ rigorous scholarship, courage and dedication for infectious diseases, along with China’s development of history of infectious diseases, treatment and study of career generations diligently committed to infectious diseases,the department of infectious diseases was served by Professor Wei Lai as the director, Professor Gao Yan as the deputy director, which is currently having 12 doctors, 9 nurses, including 2 doctoral supervisors, 2 chief physicians, and 1 associate chief physician.

 

The department of infectious diseases is characterized by etiological diagnosis, treatment and study of difficult and severe infectious cases, relying on the rich resources of infectious cases in Peking University People's Hospital, the comprehensive virus detection ability and microbiology laboratory’s ability of comprehensive detection of bacteria, fungi in the Institute of Hepatology and Department of Clinical Laboratory. According to the complexity of pathogens of infectious diseases and the diversity of human organ system, our department was dividedvirus group, bacteria group, fungal group, infectious disease group, hepatitis group etc. Clinical parts of Infectious diseases included VIP Clinic (every Tuesday, Thursday morning), Expert Clinic (every Monday morning, Tuesday, Thursday afternoon), Fever Clinic (24-hour clinic), Intestinal Clinic (24-hour clinic, April-October every year) and infectious diseases wards. We offer sophisticated diagnosis, innovative treatments and compassionate care for every patient with infectious diseases such as fever of unknown origin and infection of various sites. We provide of eight-year education, the teaching of graduate education of Peking University Health and Science Center and resident standardized training and continuing medical education and meanwhile providing consultation for in-and-out hospital clinical departments, including the rational use of antimicrobial drugs, diagnosis and treatment of critically severe patients with fever. In recent years the number of outpatient and hospitalized patients in the department of infectious diseases increased, while medical, scientific research, and teaching work came to a new height.


In 2013 the department of infectious diseases was funded by the Ministry of Health national key clinical specialist project, taking this opportunity, the department got further development. In recent years, it obtained several top ten scores in various Chinese hospital influence rankings. The department of infectious diseases grew from small to large, becoming a department of diagnosis, treatment and research of severe cases of infection, the development process includes hard work of old experts and professors and efforts of the new generation.

 

Characteristics of diagnosis and treatment

1. Highlight the etiological diagnosis, treatment and research of difficult and severe infectious diseases: relying on the rich resources of infectious cases in Peking University People's Hospital, the comprehensive virus detection ability and microbiology laboratory’s ability, according to the professional characteristics, our department was dividedvirus group, bacteria group, fungal group, infectious disease group, hepatitis group etc. and set up VIP Clinic and Expert Clinic.

2. Study, diagnosis and treatment of viral diseases in a leading position in the domestic counterparts: in 2006 our hospital’s laboratory is listed as Beijing Infectious Disease bio-safety laboratory, now has carried out the pathogen detection for many kinds of virus including hepatitis virus, human immunodeficiency virus, influenza virus, norovirus, adenovirus, EB virus, cytomegalovirus, new bunyavirus, hemorrhagic fever, dengue fever, mycoplasma, Anaplasma, Rickettsia, based on characteristics and advantages of our institute for viral pathogen research and detection, it greatly promoted the research, the comprehensive development of the clinical diagnosis and treatment on viral disease, forming a characteristics of science research and diagnosis of viral disease, being in a leading position in the domestic counterparts.

3.  Rich experience in diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease: we offer sophisticated diagnosis, innovative treatments and compassionate care for every patient with infectious disease, including fever of unknown origin, diarrhea, pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, blood stream infection, infective endocarditis, central nervous system infection, bone and joint infections, skin and soft tissue infection, invasive fungal disease, non-tuberculous mycobacteria, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, infection in immunocompromised patients, and multi drug resistant bacteria infection and so on, in addition to providing infection control guidance of rational use of antibiotics.

 

Education

The department offers many education and training opportunities, including medical student education, Beijing resident standardization training. Our senior staff members also serve as professors at Peking University Health Science Center. They teach and mentor our residents and postgraduate, who participate in one of the most prestigious and rigorous training programs in infectious medicine.


 

Research

Grants have been obtained by our professors in recent years, including national science and technology major special funding People's Republic of China and Beijing Science and Technology key projects foundation, etc. Publication have been accepted by “J Clin Virol”, “J Med Virol” , “PLoS One” , “BMC Infect Dis” , “Infect Genet Evol” and “Arch Virol” and other journals in recent years.
