The Overview
    The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH) was established by the famous Chinese expert, Professor Qiaozhi Lin in April 1942. Throughout the decades, it has had a consistent commitment to providing high-quality medical care, standard-setting education, and innovative research. Nowadays it has become a modern academic and clinical medical center, and has been recognized for advancing the science and the quality of women healthcare.
     It is a national leading academic center, a masters and doctoral degree unit. Its clinical and teaching programs have been recognized as State Key Specialties, Key Disciplines of the Ministry of Education, Key Clinical Specialists of the Ministry of Health, and 211 Engineering Priority Specialty Disciplines. The clinical and academic characteristics include the treatment of malignant gynecologic tumors, minimally invasive surgery, pelvic floor disorders, diagnosis and treatment of high-risk pregnancy and infertility etc.

    The Ob/Gyn department has a bed capacity of 186 and a strong team including 25 chief physicians, 24 deputy chief physicians, 12 attending doctors and 15 residents, providing clinical service to over 330,000 outpatients and 13,000 inpatients per year.

    The structure of Ob/Gyn department:

Gynecology
    After a development of seven decades, the Department of Gynecology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gynecology oncology, pelvic floor disorders and the minimally invasive surgery. It provides clinical service to over 150,000 outpatients 6,000 inpatients, and 4,000 operations per year. Two new subsections, the Gynecologic Oncology Center and the Pelvic Disease Treatment Center, have got a rapid development and a leading position in China.
    Gynecology oncology: The department is specialized in the early diagnosis and individualized treatment of ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer and cervical cancer.
    With the comprehensive treatment of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the overall survival and quality of life of advanced tumor patients have improved obviously. We have gained a National Science and Technology Achievement Awards, 5 national invention patents and 6 Ministry-level Science and Technological Awards.
    Minimally invasive surgery: As first-class endoscopic centre of China, it can carry out all types of gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. We have made considerable progress in the technique of laparoscopic surgery for malignant tumor in recent 10 years. In 2010, we received the honor of Stage IV Endoscopic National Training Center. A series of national continuing education program is held regularly which promotes the development of endoscopic techniques in China.
    Pelvic floor disorders: As one of the earliest female pelvic floor disorders treatment centers, it has made great progress in clinical management and carried out a variety of new surgical procedures. We explored a new comprehensive treatment model: multi-disciplinary team (MDT), gained a Ministry-level Science and Technology Awards, and got a leading position in China. We have held urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery meetings for 12 years and trained more than 5,000 doctors from 26 provinces of China.

Obstetrics
    The Department of Obstetrics has a bed capacity of 50, providing clinical service to over 100,000 outpatients and more than 3,000 deliveries. As one of the first prenatal diagnosis centers and emergency rescue centers in Beijing, it has accumulated a wealth of experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of high-risk pregnancy, pregnancy complications and refractory cases rescue. In September 1994, it passed the assessment by the WHO and became one of the first eight "baby-friendly hospital" hospitals in Beijing.
    There are thorough prenatal care system and high-risk pregnancy management system. The diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy with hematological diseases and rheumatoid immune system disease are our outstanding characteristics. Ultrasound screening for fetal congenital heart disease is also a strong point.
    We have gestation health education and postpartum guidance for more than two decades. With interesting content and variety forms, these lessons attract large quantities of gravida as well as family members. More than 4000 people participate and study in our Pregnant Women School each year. The national CEE programs undertaken by our department include “new progress of maternal-fetal medicine” and “the skills of midwifery and nursing training”.

Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine
    The Department of Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine at Peking University People’s Hospital provides specialized medical services in family planning as well as a full range of infertility services for infertile couples. In 1996, we formally established the infertility clinic and launched the second reproductive medicine center in Beijing. Consisting of three units—the Reproductive Medicine Center, the Family Planning Clinic and a ward with 16 beds. The Department provides high-quality care and services not only to the local population in Beijing, but also patients from other parts of China and overseas.
    Our main expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment for infertility caused by fallopian tube blockage, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, low ovarian reserve, serious male sperm defects and unexplained infertility. As one of the first cohort of reproductive medicine centers providing assisted reproductive technology (ART) services authenticated by the Chinese Ministry of Health, our center performs more than 2,000 cycles of in-vitro fertilization (IVF)/intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and 500 cycles of intra-uterine insemination (IUI), with a success rate reaching the top level both in China and abroad.
    In addition to the clinic consultation, we also perform non-invasive interventions and minimally invasive reproductive surgeries in the inpatient area, such as laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries for intra-uterine abnormalities, fallopian tube diseases, endometriosis, and other gynecological conditions, with the idea of maintainingrestoring women’s fertility. We are the pioneer in terms of establishing a reproductive surgery team in China and have successfully held the 1st National Conference for Reproductive Surgery and Fallopian Tubes in 2015. Our Featured Specialties are female infertility and male sterility, habitual spontaneous abortion and Gynecologic diseases for women with bearing requirement.

Medical Research
     With the great effort of the researchers, the Ob/Gyn department has undertaken 224 funds of total 60.6 million Yuan, by 863 Program Fund, National Science and Technology Support Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation. The researches focus on the systematic study of ovarian cancer vaccine development, the screening of drug resistance gene, advanced recurrent ovarian cancer surgery; the pathogenesis and molecular typing of endometrial cancer, the early prognosis model and endocrine therapy for endometrial cancer. The screening and early diagnosis of cervical cancer, the clinical trials of HPV vaccine, 3D anatomical model of pelvic floor disorders, the investigation and early diagnosis of fetal congenital heart disease screening, the management of pregnancy with hematological diseases, the incidence of infertility-related factors and etc.
    Research achievements: more than 1000 articles have been published, including near 100 SCI papers. 18 scientific and technological achievements acquired, 4 national invention patents, 5utility model patents, 32 edited academic monographs.
    Academic exchange and study: In recent years, many foreign experts and scholars visited our department and held a series of lectures. Meanwhile, more and more our doctors studied abroad such as the U.K., Canada, France, Sweden, Germany etc., for further study.
    The Journal Editorial Office is an excellent, professional and international academic exchange center, including the Chinese Journal of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Channel of Medical Reference Daily.

Medical Education
    As one of the teaching bases of Peking University, the Ob/Gyn department has been undertaking the education of undergraduates, post graduates, clinical doctors and post-doctors. With an excellent teaching tradition, generations of physicians devote themselves to innovative education. We have accumulated rich experience in medical  education, especially in the teaching model development. We have published more than 20 in the education field articles, acquired 5 utility model patents, 7 professional textbooks and monographs.
